Leaving Him There

by Amy L. George

We cast his ashes

upon the waters.

The hand we held

as children

disappears,

as do his stories,

the scent of his aftershave,

calm of his voice,

all drowned out

by wave and wind.

We whisper goodbye.

The boat pulls away

from the site

and I wonder

how many others

have left grandfathers

to the embrace

of the sea.
