The Orange Room Review

Accessible poetry of substance

The High School Counselor at Target

by Dale Wisely

He watches the girl ahead of him in checkout
drop a pack of single-edge Gillettes on the counter.
She avoids eye contact with the cashier
and fumbles for the money to pay.

Don't start this, he thinks and he wants
to push the words into her head.

Your skin.  All that is sacred lives on your skin.

All holy writ in every language--
on your wrists, your arms, your thighs.
